  7. How do I use The Reader?
  1. When I unzip the downloaded file, the program asks for a password. Where is the password?
Each downloaded file needs to be unzipped twice. When you unzip the original downloaded file, two files will be produced: "UnZipMe.zip" and "Password.txt". The file called "UnZipMe.zip" is always password protected. Simply open "Password.txt" by double clicking on it and read the password which will be somewhere near the end of the file. Note that the beginning of the file is the End User License Agreement. We followed this approach for two reasons:
    1. Our lawyers wanted to insure that the license agreement was at least opened by the customer
    2. This allows us to freely distribute upgrades since only the registered users will have the passwords
  2. I've installed my database but there isn't an icon on the PalmPilot's applications menu. What is wrong?
The Finer Life Website databases and reference guides are only data files. The Finer Life Database Reader is the application file. If there isn't an icon after installing a database then it indicates that the Reader has not been installed. Purchase and install The Reader to solve this problem.
  3. Every other record in my database says "DEMO". How do I make this go away?
To allow customers to try our products before they buy, we provide a free demonstration version of The Finer Life Database Reader. This demonstration version replaces every other record with the word "DEMO". By purchasing and installing the full capability Reader this problem will be cured.
  4. I purchased one of your products but now I find I need to purchase The Reader, too. Why do I have to buy both products?
We discussed the strategy of how to best distribute our products before we launched the website and settled on the "Reader" plus "Database" approach for two primary reasons. The first reason was memory size. The Reader consumes about 48 Kbytes of memory on the PalmPilot. If we made each product standalone (i.e. combined the Reader with the database) then each database would be 48 Kbytes bigger. While the available memory size on the PalmPilot is growing, application memory size is still a concern for most users. The second reason for this architecture was cost. We licensed technology for the encryption in The Reader and we have to pay a license fee each copy of The Reader we sell. By having this cost only incurred once by each of our customers, we have been able to keep the cost down for each of the databases.
  5. Your website said that my database should have 400 records but it only has 20. How do I get the rest?
To allow customers to try our products before they buy, we provide a free demonstration version of each of The Finer Life Website products. This demonstration version only contains the first 20 records of the database or the first 20 records of each part of the database if it is a split product. By purchasing and installing the full capability product this problem will be cured.
  6. I installed another one of your databases but all I can get to show in the database list in the Reader is one database. What is wrong?
You probably have the LE (Limited Edition) version of the Reader. Tap "About" on the man menu and see if the Reader is the LE version. Purchasing and installing the full functionality Reader will allow you to view up to 30 Finer Life databases.
  7. How do I use The Reader?
